Microsoft Copilot for Energy: Grid Knowledge With Safety Boundaries

A utility activates M365 Copilot for office staff. The productivity gains are real and uncontroversial — summarizing meetings, drafting emails, searching SharePoint. Operations Copilot (Copilot Studio agents for control room, field, customer service) requires grounded retrieval against current operating procedures, cited sources, explicit safety refusal patterns, NERC CIP boundary compliance for any agent accessing BES data, and the training that makes every operator understand what the agent can and cannot be trusted for. Done with this separation, both tracks deliver. Done as a single deployment, the safety requirements of operations either constrain the office or get ignored.
