Stage 1: AI-Aware — Building Understanding and Commitment

Stage 2: AI-Ready — Building the Machine

AI-Ready is the construction phase — building the data infrastructure, ML platform, talent pipeline, and operational processes that support AI at scale. This stage is where most organizations underinvest because it's less visible than deploying models but more important for long-term success.

Data Foundation

AI-Ready data infrastructure means: reliable pipelines that deliver data at the freshness ML requires, data quality monitoring that catches issues before they corrupt model training, a feature store (or equivalent) that makes engineered features reusable across models, and data governance that ensures training data is representative, unbiased, and compliant. ML Platform and MLOps

Characteristics of AI-Native Operations

AI product teams: Cross-functional teams (data scientist + ML engineer + domain expert + product manager) own specific AI products end-to-end — from use case identification through deployment and ongoing optimization. These teams operate like software product teams: they ship, monitor, iterate, and improve continuously.

Automated decision augmentation: AI outputs are embedded in operational workflows — the claims system surfaces fraud scores, the CRM surfaces churn risk, the supply chain system surfaces demand forecasts. Humans make decisions with AI assistance, not despite it. AI agents handle routine decisions autonomously (within governance guardrails), escalating to humans only for exceptions.

Continuous model deployment: New models deploy weekly, not quarterly. The deployment pipeline, monitoring infrastructure, and governance process are mature enough to support rapid iteration. Model versioning, A/B testing, and canary deployment are standard practice — not special projects.
